A.L. Kennedy was born in Dundee in 1965 where her father was Professor of Psychology at Dundee University. She was educated at the High School of Dundee and at Warwick University. Her first collection of short stories Night Geometry and the Garscadden Trains (1990) won the Mail On Sunday/John Llewelyn Rhys prize, as well as the Scotsman Saltire award for the best first Scottish book in 1991.

Each new book that has followed has been highly acclaimed. In 1993 she was chosen as one of the twenty Best of Young British novelists, and also won the Somerset Maughan award for her first novel Looking for the Possible Dance. In 1995 she was the joint-winner of the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year award for her novel So I am Glad. She has since come to be regarded as one of the most important and original writers in Scotland.
