Culloden and the Last Clansman
In the period following the Battle of Culloden the government supporters had a virtually free hand in the Highlands. Colin Campbell was one who attempted to evict people from Duror in order to take over their houses and put his own family and supporters in their place. When he was murdered a scapegoat was required to restore the oppressive atmosphere and James Stewart, a focus of resistance, was the person targeted.
