The Eyemouth Fishing Disaster of 1881
On the 14th Oct 1881, after a prolonged period of bad weather, fishermen were desperate to put to sea and seized on the calm morning conditions. However within a few hours the country was suddenly battered by severe storms and the boats were caught at sea. Many were dashed onto the rocks making for harbour where their families could only watch in horror. 189 men from the south of Scotland were lost including 129 from Eyemouth.
