The Story of an Island

Eigg is one of the most distinctive islands on Scotland's west coast; the unique shape of the Sgurr of Eigg means even the most inexperienced of travellers can easily identify it from the mainland. However it has seen many troubles in its history. In recent times there were a number of eccentric and unusual owners whose control over the islander's lives meant that it was often in the news but usually for the wrong reasons. The community buyout, which started as a controversial idea which some claimed threatened landowners throughout Scotland, has come to be seen as a turning point in the battle to maintain livelihoods in remote places and to sustain and develop a traditional culture.
