An Honest Trade - book cover Edited by Alistair McCleery, David Finkelstein and Jennie Renton

In the 1970s and 80s Scotland had two of the oldest and best respected bookshops in the world - John Smiths of Glasgow and James Thins of Edinburgh - as well as many other smaller shops. Both companies had a number of branches and held a wide range of stock in many different subjects. By 2002 both these companies had gone, the victims of a totally changed market for books and the advent of cut-price opposition from large chains and supermarkets. This book looks at the changes that prompted their demise and brought about the current situation.
