Mel Gibson's description of Scots as "warrior poets" shows something of the curious dichotomy of Scotland's attitude to poetry. Men will profess themselves too macho to bother about poetry and then go misty-eyed at Burns Suppers. But Robert Burns is by no means the only major figure in Scottish poetry - Sorley MacLean, Iain Crichton Smith, Norman MacCaig and Carol Ann Duffy are just a few of the names that show that Scotland remains a land of inspired poets.
